2019 Ace of Clubs and Mini McKenney Unit awards

Unit 539 Top Ranking Awards

Traditionally, April has been the month for our Unit to recognize achievements by many of its fine players in the previous year.

The Helen Shanbrom Ace of Clubs contest recognizes achievement at the club level. The contest is named in honor of Shanbrom, a Grand Life Master from Florida, who won her category 20 times. Only master points won at clubs are counted for these races, which are held at the National level, the District level and the Unit level.

The Mini McKenney contest, named after former ACBL Chief William McKenney, recognizes members who have won the most master points during the calendar year. All "pigmented" points are counted, excluding points earned online. These races are held at the National, District and Unit level and recipients are presented with a Medallion representing their achievement.

We have always dedicated a Unit game in April to present the awards associated with these 2 annual races. Winners in both contests are honored with a certificate (Ace of Clubs) or a medallion (Mini McKenney). A celebratory cake is devoured during half time and a big round of applause is given to these champions. Unfortunately, April 2020 did not see the crowning of these award recipients in a club setting.

To the following 2019 award recipients, a big Congrats from all of us! You should have received an email from our Unit President congratulating you on your great achievement. Your Ace of Clubs certificate and/or Mini-McKenney medallion will be handed to you at the next physical get-together.

A special thank you goes to Carolyn Casey who has been managing the Unit Awards program for years. Sweet Carolyn continues to devote many hours to this program, supporting the Unit in the background despite having stepped down from the Board of Directors to be able to attend to her mom.

Special Acknowledgments

From left to right: Philip Robzyk, Patrick Staley, J Stephen Haine, Brian Castle, Jim Johnsen, Paul Darin.

Special acknowledgments must go to a few exceptional achievements at the NATIONAL level (pictured above):

Phillip Robzyk was 16th on the National Ace of Clubs list in his 50-100 points category.

Patrick Staley won the 100-200 points category of the 2019 Mini-McKenney race at the NATIONAL level, as well as placed in the top 14 of the National Ace of Clubs race in his same category. When asked to comment, Patrick thanked partners Brian Castle, Freda Anderson and Dick Hill. Well done Patrick!

J Stephen Haine was in the Top 25 for his 100-200 pts category in the Ace of Clubs race.

Brian Castle, who is one of Patrick's regular partners, deserves a special mention for being fourth in the National Mini-McKenney race for his 200-300 pts. category.

Jim Johnsen, aka JJ, missed winning the National 5000-7500 category by a narrow margin, with 1157 MPs in 2019!

Paul Darin came in 10th overall in his 7,500-10,000 pt. category in the 2019 Mini-McKenney race.
