Traditionally, April has been the month for our Unit to recognize achievements by many of its fine players in the previous year.
The Helen Shanbrom Ace of Clubs contest recognizes achievement at the club level. The contest is named in honor of Shanbrom, a Grand Life Master from Florida, who won her category 20 times. Only master points won at clubs are counted for these races, which are held at the National level, the District level and the Unit level.
The Mini McKenney contest, named after former ACBL Chief William McKenney, recognizes members who have won the most master points during the calendar year. All "pigmented" points are counted, excluding points earned online. These races are held at the National, District and Unit level and recipients are presented with a Medallion representing their achievement.
We have always dedicated a Unit game in April to present the awards associated with these 2 annual races. Winners in both contests are honored with a certificate (Ace of Clubs) or a medallion (Mini McKenney). A celebratory cake is devoured during half time and a big round of applause is given to these champions. Unfortunately, April 2020 did not see the crowning of these award recipients in a club setting.
To the following 2019 award recipients, a big Congrats from all of us! You should have received an email from our Unit President congratulating you on your great achievement. Your Ace of Clubs certificate and/or Mini-McKenney medallion will be handed to you at the next physical get-together.
A special thank you goes to Carolyn Casey who has been managing the Unit Awards program for years. Sweet Carolyn continues to devote many hours to this program, supporting the Unit in the background despite having stepped down from the Board of Directors to be able to attend to her mom.
